Mabuyu is a type of candy made from the seeds of the Baobab tree fruit.

The tree is called “Mbuyu” in Swahili hence the name.  Mabuyu candy has been around for generations and is common in the coastal region of Kenya.

Once the baobab fruit is ripe, it is harvested and the seeds are scooped out. The seeds can be enjoyed in the natural form in which it comes from the pod.

However, the popular forms of mabuyu candy sold across the country are the ones that are flavored.

Mabuyu Tree:

Every part of the baobab tree – leaves, fruit pulp, seeds, and bark – has been traditionally used for food, medicine, and to make household goods like woven baskets, rope, cloth, and fishing nets.
